Proud Winner of the 2006
Friendship Force International HUMANITARIAN AWARD
The Friendship Force concept was conceived in America in 1978 by former President Jimmy Carter and a Presbyterian minister Wayne Smith. It was founded on the idea that the world would be a better more peaceful place if people got to know each other better by traveling and staying in each others’ countries and members’ homes. The head office annually allots each club a designated country where they will travel and be billeted in each others’ homes for usually one week.
The Tweed Valley Friendship Force group was first formed in 1986 by the late John Constable who was a Tweed Tourism Officer and Jan Norris of Murwillumbah. The group enjoyed their first two travel exchanges in 1986 and 1987 to Germany the first year and New Zealand and the USA in the second year. In 1988 on the 20th October it became incorporated. Since this time, the group has enjoyed traveling to many countries throughout the world. In 1990 we won the International Club of the Year Award judged for its ability to host and congeniality. In 2006 the group won the Humanitarian Award for its work in fundraising and on- going support to build a Secondary Boarding School in Tanzania however as of the 31st December 2010, the Friendship Force direct involvement in fundraising for this school will come to a close. For any further information contact the Webmaster.
Currently the group has 52 members.
We extend a warm welcome to all local visitors and potential domestic and international traveling members to our group. Please contact one of our Executives for further information.
